Hadestown

Teen Edition

Winner of 8 Tony Awards. Ten nights only at The Playhouse Theatre.

You are on an unforgettable journey to the underworld and back through this retelling of the haunting Greek tragedy. Inspired by traditions of classic American folk music and vintage New Orleans jazz, Hadestown pits industry against nature, doubt against faith, and fear against love.

A song against the dark.

Orpheus loves Eurydice. They're young. They're broke. They have nothing but each other and a half-finished song. Then winter comes, and Hades offers Eurydice a deal she can't refuse: warmth, food, security. She follows him underground.

Orpheus goes after her. With just his faith and a song. Hades agrees to let them both leave, on one condition: Orpheus must walk ahead and never look back to see if she's following.

You already know how this story ends. You'll want to see it anyway. The score mixes folk, jazz and blues into something that won eight Tony Awards and hasn't left Broadway in seven years.

Hobart, 22 to 31 May. Right before Dark Mofo darkens the city. Ten nights. Then it's done.

Two of Broadway's most decorated creators.

Anaïs Mitchell
Music, Lyrics, Book
Anaïs Mitchell wrote Hadestown over more than a decade. The show began as a folk-opera she staged in Vermont towns in 2006, became a concept album in 2010, then built into the Broadway musical that won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including Best Original Score for Mitchell. She's a Grammy winner, a member of folk supergroup Bonny Light Horseman, and the author of "Working on a Song: The Lyrics of Hadestown."
Rachel Chavkin
Original Director
Director Rachel Chavkin shaped Hadestown from its 2016 Off-Broadway premiere at New York Theatre Workshop through the National Theatre season in London to its 2019 Broadway opening, winning the Tony Award for Best Direction along the way. She is one of only six women to have ever won that Tony for a musical.

Is Hadestown: Teen Edition different from the original show?+

It's the full musical, with all the emotion and story audiences have come to love. The only difference is the performers are all 19 years or under, and some songs are in a slightly different key. ExitLeft is bringing its trademark quality theatre to guarantee that you will be blown away.

Is the Teen Edition worth seeing if I'm an Adult?+

Yes. The story hits differently when performed by young people. Orpheus and Eurydice are supposed to be young. The themes of hope, doubt and choosing safety over love land harder when the cast is closer to the characters' age. Adults consistently say they didn't expect to be moved this much.

How long is the show?+

Around two hours plus interval. Evenings finish a little after 9:30pm. Matinees a little after 3:30pm.

Is it suitable for younger audiences?+

Recommended for ages 8 and above. The show explores big ideas like hope, love, choice, perseverance and loss, in a poetic and age-appropriate way for upper primary-aged children and older. Parents and carers of younger audience members (8–12 years) may wish to discuss the mythological themes beforehand, particularly the concept of the "underworld," to provide context and reassurance. There is no explicit language or violence in this edition.

Where do I park?+

Street parking on Bathurst and Argyle is metered and usually available evenings. Salamanca car park is a 5 minute walk for evening shows when meters are off. The Argyle car park has after-hours rates.

What is your refund and exchange policy?+

Our full ticketing policy is available on the ExitLeft website at exitleft.com.au/ticketing-policy. For specific changes to your booking, contact the Playhouse Theatre Box Office directly on 03 6234 1536.

Is the venue accessible?+

Yes. The Playhouse Theatre is wheelchair accessible. Companion Card accepted at no additional charge for the companion. If you need specific accessibility support, contact us before booking and we'll arrange it.

What should I wear?+

No dress code. Whatever feels right. Most theatre-goers in Hobart err toward smart-casual but jeans are fine.
